Born in Omaha, NE to Martin and Clara (Veskerna) Thompson. Survived by Roberta, his wife of 66+ years; one brother, Bert of O'Neill, NE; children, Sherry Schnack of Marion, IA, Bert of Minneapolis, MN, Alan (Tammy) of Elkhorn, NE, and Bill, Jr. (Jan) of Defiance, MO; 9 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Clara; his sister Irene Ohrt; and brothers, Melvin, Martin, Leonard, Robert, Glen, and John. He served his country in the US Marine Corps
for 4 years in the South Pacific during WWII
. He farmed near Anita, IA most of his life and operated a corn shelling business there, then sold the farm and moved to Marion, IA in 1969. He worked as a crane operator for The Link-Belt Corporation until his retirement in 1982. He and Roberta travelled throughout the South during the winter months for the next 14 years in their RV. They sold their home near Mt. Vernon, IA in 1996 and moved to Omaha where he worked at the Omaha Auction Center until he retired at age 85.
He donated his body to medical research at Creighton University Medical Center, where he will be cremated at the conclusion of the studies, and he will be interred at a family plot in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Omaha. On Saturday, April 27, 2013, the family will hold an OPEN HOUSE from 1-3pm, with a MEMORIAL SERVICE at 2pm, at VFW
