Barbara Wenstrand Abernathy, age 91, died Wednesday, July 11, 2012, in Omaha. Bobbie grew up in Omaha and attended Brownell Hall and Wellesley College. She was an elder at Dundee Presbyterian Church where for years she was active in the life of the church. She was a longtime member of PEO, Sigma Mu, Dundee Presbyterian prayer chain, and The Monday Book Club. Bobbie had wonderful friendships through these spiritual and educational endeavors. Bobbie was a beloved friend and companion to people of all ages. She was a loving wife to her husband Dick Abernathy with whom she lived 60 years filled with loyalty, love, purpose and humor. Bobbie was a wonderful and attentive mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, always interested in the lives and concerns of her family on a daily basis, through conversation and through prayer. She always had time to talk with those who came into her life. She will be greatly missed. God was the trusted center of Bobbie's life. She endeavored to do all He asked of her; she walked the talk. Bobbie was devoted to her religious faith, and knew the grace of God. Bobbie had a capacity to lighten the load of others with her combination of warmth, compassion, wisdom, and heartfelt humility. Over the past few days the Abernathy family has been encircled with stories of Bobbie's capacity to warm and lighten the days of others, and we are so grateful. Bobbie loved to laugh, and she shared the lightness and perspective that great humor provides every day. She had a wonderful, warm laugh, and she laughed a lot! Her interests included reading, study of the bible, dancing, writing letters and sending flowers and gifts to others. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Hunt Abernathy, Jr. She is survived by her children, William S Abernathy, MD and his wife Katherine D Abernathy, Barbara Ann West, Kathleen D Abernathy and her husband Colin S Pope; her 5 grandchildren -- Brad West, Jason West, Andrew Abernathy, Jenna Pope, Hans Pope, and by 5 great grandchildren. The Abernathy family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Crown Pointe for their kindness and friendship over the years. Bobbie felt safe, loved, and very well cared for at Crown Pointe. We also thank the staff of Brighton Gardens, Methodist Hospital, and the many providers and friends who eased her way with their compassionate care.
The FUNERAL was held Saturday 7/14/12 at Dundee Presbyterian Church with a wonderful and meaningful service given by Pastor J.P. Carlson. Donations may be made in her name to Dundee Presbyterian Church, 5312 Underwood Avenue, Omaha, Nebraska 68132. "New days, new ways. Love stays."
