Barton Wormington Obituary

Wormington, Barton Dean
Age 58 - Jan 22, 2011
Omaha, died in Longview, WA while visiting family and friends. He was 58 years young. Preceding in death were father, George David Wormington and brother, Daniel Benjamin Wormington. He was survived by his mother Bethel Barton Wormington and step-father Al Winiger; brothers, Dave (Michaela Green) Wormington, Mark Wormington, Curt (Amy) Wormington and sister-in-law, Cindy Wormington; step-brothers, Chris and Ben Winiger; son, Benjamin (Alissa) Wormington and daughter, Jessica Wormington; former wife, Monica Wormington; current wife, Margaret Wormington, and two loving greyhounds, Grace and Suzie; many loving nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Bart was born in Kansas City, MO. He attended K-10 in Omaha Public Schools; High School in Kelso, WA; received an AA in General Science from Lower Columbia College, a BA in Earth Science and Biology from Western WA University, and an MS in Secondary Science Education from the University of Nebraska Omaha. Bart served in the United States Air Force from 1973-77, stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, and Oxfordshire, England. Bart had been teaching for the Millard Public Schools district since 1981 and spent the last fifteen years teaching 8th grade science at Russell Middle School, until he retired this June. Bart was well-known for cigar-box dulcimers, "proper" paper snowflakes, the NASA EarthKam, dissecting electronics, and for being the boys head coach for track & field. He was also the Chess Team sponsor- 4x state champs, twice top-5 at nationals, novice division; and the Millard West HS chess sponsor with multiple metro and state team championships. Bart volunteered and acted at the Omaha Community Playhouse in the '80's and 90's and was more recently a "JIVE" volunteer for the Omaha Jitterbug Club. Bart loved the outdoors, the earth, and all creation. Other interests of Bart's were SCCA Solo racing, motorcycling and biking, charcoal /chalk pastel drawing; he also traveled to Shizuoka, Japan. A life so fully lived, Bart wanted nothing more but to make a difference. He will live on in the memories of those he taught and loved, those he debated with, those he battled on the chess board--but there's more. Even his death will bring quality of life to others by his generous gift of self--Bart was an organ donor, and the Community Tissue Services of Portland, OR stated that up to fifty people will receive life enhancing gifts from him. Following Bart's example of selfless giving, his family has set up a memorial fund in Bart's name. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Bart Wormington Memorial c/o the MPS Foundation, 5225 S. 159th Ave, Omaha, NE 68135. Depending on the volume, donations will be used to either purchase chess boards for the Russell Middle School chess club and/or establish a science learning scholarship. If you wait to make a donation until the memorial service, you will receive an orange wrist band that reads "Learn Teach Learn Teach" in remembrance of Bart. Wrist bands are available as of Friday, February 4 through the family for a $2 donation. They will be available at his memorial service, and all proceeds will contribute to his MPSF fund.

I had Mr. Wormington for 8th grade science at Millard North Jr High over 25 years ago. He's the only teacher from middle school I actually remember. I loved his class. He made it fun, interesting and he genuinely cared for his students.

My deepest condolences to his family and friends. I know I am but one of his many many past students and he probably wouldn't have even remembered me but that's ok. I will never forget him.

I graduated from Millard Public Schools in 1989 - STILL my memory of Mr. Wormington is clear - that is because he made an impact! I know We All Remember him, and thought he was "the bomb"....this obituary made it to me on a social networking site - and I passed it along. We all loved you - if not for the invaluable science then for kindness and wit during a hard time in life (middle school). Thank You! God Speed.

Mr. Wormington was the greatest teacher I've ever had. I looked forward to going to school only because I got to spend 45 minutes everyday in his classroom. He would always get off-track and talk about things that mattered a whole lot more than the 8th grade science we were learning. I have never been more focused in a class than I was in his class. He gave me a different outlook on the world, on life, on everything, and I will never forget him. I'm now a junior in high school, and I still have the little metal globe that he gave everyone on the last day of school, telling us that we have one world, and we have to take care of it. I wanted to take it back to him after my senior year. RIP Mr. Wormington. You're my hero.

Ben & Jessica,
I worked at Russell with your father. I would enjoy conversations with him after school while passing his classroom. He was a proud father and spoke highly of his children.
I am so sorry for your loss.
God Bless

I had Mr. Wormington about 6 years ago. He is one of the most caring students I have ever had. He wasn't the conventional by the book teacher which made his class so great. I am currently going to college to become a teacher and his passion for teaching is an example of why I want to teach. Sorry for loss. RIP
