Brooks Poley Obituary

Poley, Brooks J., M.D.
Age 78

Passed away in McAllen, TX on April 21 following a brief battle with cancer. Born in Des Moines, IA and raised in Omaha, NE, Brooks graduated from Central High School, Princeton University, and the University of Nebraska Medical School, and completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Pennsylvania. Brooks and his family moved to Minneapolis, MN in 1965, where he began his career. Over the next thirty plus years, practicing with Ophthalmology, P.A. and later, Brooks Poley Eye Associates, he became recognized not only as a preeminent surgeon but also for his close and enduring patient relationships. Brooks served as both President of the Minneapolis Society of Medicine and Chief of Staff at Eitel Hospital; he was a founding member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery; and acted as an Assistant Clinical Professor at University of Minnesota Medical School. Among his charitable endeavors, he served aboard the Hope Ship; the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital; co-chaired the initial fund drive to establish the Minneapolis Children's Hospital; and, upon his retirement, continued his lifelong passion for healthcare through his work with Volunteers in Medicine in Hilton Head, SC. Married to his wife, Liz, for 55 years, he loved travel, bridge, politics, art, golf, tennis and, most of all, his family. Throughout his life Brooks was a tireless worker, an incurable optimist, an innovator, and a constant father and friend. He is survived by Liz; his 4 children, Susan (Jon) Yeager, Brooks (Margaret) Poley, Stephen, and Kate (Mark) Urich; 10 grandchildren; and his brother Jeff (Janet) Poley.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held at 2pm on June 7 at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis.

I just received word about Brooks passing. Please accept my belated sympathies.
I was friends with Brooks & Liz in Colleton River. We joked because I'm originally from the Twin Cites and we had an instant connection. Give my love to Liz.

I can see because of Dr. Poley. It's been nearly twenty years since I was a patient but he left the legacy of sight to me and so many other patients and my life is better because of him. I thank his family for sharing this remarkable doctor with me and so many others.

Besides his formidable professional accomplishments, he was always fun to be with at the American Eye Study Club meetings. We will miss him dearly and will always remembr him fondly.
