Age 91. Born in Omaha, NE to Annie (Andrews) and Ralph J. Hershey; raised in Carter Lake, IA. Graduated from North High School in Omaha and joined the U.S. Coast Guard in May 1940. Served from 1940-1946 in WWII as a Gunner's mate. He served in the European, African and Middle Eastern theaters and brought troops to Normandy Beach on D-Day. After on Honorable discharge he began employment with Northwestern Bell as a technician. He retired in 1983 after 37 years. He and another telephone man received the "Vail Medal" in 1952 for saving a 7 year-old boy's life from a house fire that destroyed the home. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, VFW and delivered Meals on Wheels. Bob was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church for over 50 years. On June 15, 1947 he married Burna Mae Dallinger at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha. They were married 65 years and to this union came 3 children. Bob enjoyed the outdoors, camping, fishing, traveling and working in his yard. He enjoyed a good book and an old western movie. He loved being with his family and telling them his boyhood stories. Survivors include his wife Burna Mae, Norfolk, NE; his daughters; Bobette Volquardsen (Bill), Valley, NE, Melinda Reinert (John), Lincoln, NE and son Jim (Julie) Hershey, Kamiah, ID; grandchildren, Bobbie, Kim, Stacey, Katie, James, Evan, Colin and Jordan and 9 great grandchildren. Bob was proceeded in death by his parents; brother Ralph John and grandson Brennan.
Private family services with Military honors will be held Friday, April 5th at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, Lincoln, NE. Pastor Edgar Schaumbach of St. John's Lutheran Church, Norfolk, NE will be officiating.
