Omaha, NE. Passed away peacefully in his sleep at Immanuel Hospital. Deacon Hammonds was born and raised in Carroll County, MS and was the son of Richard C. Hammonds and Addie Bledsoe. He was married to his first wife, Rosalie Moore and they resided in Council Bluffs, IA until the time of her death in 1984 due to illness. In June 1986, he married the late Erma Jo (Gills) Hammonds and was a cherished and loving husband until the time of her recent passing. James worked in the construction field until his retirement a number of years ago. He is survived by his son, James Odell Martin of Carroll County, MS; daughter, Janette (Allan) Ninneman of Indianapolis, IN; step-children, Jerry, Rickie, Curtis, Alvin, Beverly, Marvin, David, and Clifford Gills, all of Omaha. In addition, he leaves to mourn, his brothers, John Walter Hammonds, Philadelphia, PA, Willie Ernest (Oradell) Hammonds, Winona, MS, James Louis (Helen) Hammonds, Memphis, TN, Chester Earl (Beulah) Hammonds, Winona, MS, and Mac Arthur (Emmer) Hammonds, Winona, MS. Deacon Hammonds was blessed with a number of in-laws, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who will eternally miss the great void this warrior of God has left. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; wives, Rosalie Hammonds and Erma Hammonds; brothers, Guy, Willie Paul, Richard, Otis, and Gene Calvin and sister, Aretha.
VIEWING 6-8pm Wednesday, February 13 at mortuary. SERVICES 11am Thursday, February 14 at Rising Star Baptist Church, 1823 Lothrop St. Interment, Forest Lawn Cemetery. Friends and family will be received at 3026 Curtis Ave. THOMAS FUNERAL HOME
