Hamer, Verla E. (Elliott)

Verla passed away Friday April 19th. She is survived by her husband of 61 years David, son Roger, daughter-in-law Patti, granddaughter Constance and grandson Michael. Verla is preceded in death by son Dennis, parents Paul and Luellen Elliott, and sister Shirley Parke. Verla was very active in the local music and entertainment community. She was a longtime member of the vocal and bell choirs at First Central Congregationalist Church, a founding member of Die Meistersingers (The Master Singers) choral group, a long term volunteer with the American Red Cross, and worked behind the scenes and on stage for the Omaha Press Club Show for 35 years. Verla was born on March 11, 1925 near Emporia, Kansas, graduating from David City High School in 1943. She then worked for the United States Army Air Force as a teletype operator from 1943-45. Verla was a graduate of Midland Lutheran College and was a teacher and coach at Roosevelt School in North Platte, Nebraska. Verla married David Hamer of Wayne, Nebraska on June 29, 1952 and raised two sons, Dennis and Roger. Verla was a cub scout den leader for Pack 75 and taught sewing at Uta Halee.
A MEMORIAL SERVICE celebrating the life of Verla E. Hamer (Elliott) is set for Friday, May 10th at 2pm at First Central Congregationalist Church at 36th and Harney. Memorials to Mastersingers, PO Box 34572, Omaha, NE 68134.
