Former Omaha resident, Eugene A. Conley died at home in Carmel, CA following a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melville and Margaret Conley of Nebraska City, NE; and his wife Erma Grace (Fuller) Conley. He is survived by 4 children, Dr. Tom (Sara) Conley, Austin, TX, Roger (Rebecca) Conley, Chevy Chase, MD, John Conley (Cathy Lang), Omaha, and Dr. Sue Conley (Dr. Michael Stieghorst), Middleton, WI; 6 grandchildren; brother, Curtis, Denver, CO; and sister, Claire, in London, England. Gene was a Veteran of the US Navy, where he was a Naval Aviator at the end of World War II. Born in Nebraska City, he attended the University of Nebraska with his wife of 52 years, Erma Grace Fuller. They married in 1948. He was an insurance executive, and retired as Chairman and CEO of Guarantee Mutual Life, now part of Lincoln Financial. He joined American Mutual Life and was an agent in Ashland, NE and Lincoln, NE, before going to the home office in Des Moines, IA. In 1972, the family returned to Omaha, where he became President of Guarantee Mutual; and a leader in the insurance industry. As a community leader, he served as Chairman of United Way; the Omaha Chamber of Commerce; University of Nebraska Foundation; Board of Governor's of Nebraska Wesleyan University; and on the Board of Southern Methodist University. He also served on the boards of Clarkson Hospital; Methodist Hospital; and received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He was a Councillor, then Governor of the Knights of AkSarBen. He was also on the boards of Goodwill; Henry Doorly Zoo; and the Nebraska Region of the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He was appointed a Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army and SAC Consultation Committee.
MEMORIAL SERVICES will be held in Carmel, CA and in Omaha. A Private Burial will take place in Omaha. Arrangements in charge of HEAFEY-HEAFEY-HOFFMANN DWORAK-CUTLER West Center Chapel 78th & West Center (402-391-3900).
