ONEIDA >> Don E. Burns, 86, of Oneida, N.Y. died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 28 in Raleigh, N.C.
Don was born on Dec. 17, 1927 in Cleveland, Ohio, the second of three children to G. Cecil Burns and Edna Elmore Burns. Despite the difficult economy of that era, Don often reminisced about time spent with his grandparents in Ohio. He graduated from high school in 1946 in E. Rochester, N.Y. and entered the US Army
serving in the 88th Signal Company in Europe.
Following his service to the country, Don married Mary T. Ernenwein in 1950 at St. Patrick's Church in Oneida, where they settled to raise a family. Don pursued a degree in accounting and graduated from Utica College of Syracuse University. He worked at Henny Motor Co. in Canastota and later as a contracting administrator for the US Department of Defense in Syracuse until his retirement in 1994.
Don was passionate about many things including family, politics, religion, golf and Syracuse University and Duke University sports. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Parish in Oneida and a member of the E. Bart Hanifin Council 473 Knights of Columbus. Don was a charter member of the Kanon Valley Country Club and also served on the board of directors for the Oneida Community Chest.
In recent years, Don and Mary spent winter months in Flagler Beach, Fla. enjoying the sun, golf and good friends. Don always looked forward to their return to Sayles Street in the summer and their many friends in Oneida.
Surviving besides his loving wife of 63 years, Mary, are his daughter and son-in-law, Donna and William Schwede of Raleigh, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Lois Burns of Tully, N.Y.; grandchildren, Malcolm and Nathan Schwede of Raleigh and Corinne Burns of Boston, Mass. Don is also survived by his sister, Joyce Ferrin of East Rochester, N.Y. and several loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Jean Nicholson of Berea, Ohio.
Funeral services for Mr. Burns are incomplete at this time and will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Ironside Funeral Home in Oneida, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County at 250 Hospice Circle in Raleigh, N.C. 27607.
