ONEIDA - Louis R. Salerno, 75, of 524 Lynnburt St. died peacefully Dec. 6, 2012 in the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility where he had been a resident since Sept. 14, 2012.
Louie was born on Jan. 30, 1937 in Oneida, a son of Joseph L. and Catherine Cesario Salerno. A lifetime resident of Oneida, he was a graduate of Oneida High School Class of 1955.
He married Gail S. Kimball on Aug. 22, 1959 in St. Patrick's Church, Oneida.
Louie proudly served the City of Oneida as a professional firefighter
from 1959 to 1986 retiring after 27 years of service at the rank of Deputy Chief. He also owned and operated Oneida Seafood from 1962 to 1992 and then owned and operated Salerno Bros. Lighting and Appliances from 1992 to 2005.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church in Oneida, the Oneida Firemen's Benevolent Assn., the Rome and Oneida Police and Firemen's Retirement Assn., Oneida Republican Committee and was a member and Past Chief of the Oneidas Club. He also enjoyed outdoor sports and was a former member of the Bells and Beaux Square Dance Club.
Surviving is his wife, Gail; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Ellen Salerno and Kevin and Dawne Salerno, both of Oneida; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Anthony and Jean Salerno of Canastota, Joseph and Patricia Salerno of Oneida; a brother-in-law, Charles Hummel of Sherrill; a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth "Betty Ann" and Nell Donovan of Ramona, Calif.; four grandchildren, Chad (Stephanie) Salerno, Carrie (Thomas) Molinari, Christy (Marc) Bonacci and Ashley Salerno, 11 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his parents and a sister, Catherine Hummel.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012 at 11 a.m. with a prayer service offered at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., followed by an 11:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church, Oneida, with the Rev. Richard J. Kapral officiating assisted by Deacon James M. Chappell. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Oneida. Friends are invited and may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida, N.Y. 13421. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oneida Fire Department Rescue Squad 109 N. Main St., Oneida, N.Y. 13421.
