DURHAMVILLE >> P. Walter Foland, 95, formerly of Broad Street and Lamb Avenue, Canastota, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2014, in Bethany Gardens, Rome, where he had been a resident for the past three weeks.
Born in Oneida on Sept. 10, 1918, he was a son of Perry A. and Helen Doxtader Foland. A lifelong resident of the area, Walter was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1936. He married Betty Lust in the Town of Verona on Dec. 14, 1940. Mrs. Foland died on Feb. 7, 2004.
Prior to his retirement in 1980, Walter was employed with Revere Copper. He had previously been employed with the former Oneida City Hospital and Oneida Limited Silversmiths. Walter was a veteran of the United States Navy
, serving in the Atlantic and Pacific as a Second Class Machinist from 1943-45. After retirement he enjoyed working with small engines and machines at his home doing repair and refurbishing work.
Walter was a member of the Durhamville Fire Department where he served with the fire police as captain, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars
, Canastota Post No. 600 where he formerly served as chaplain, a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Verona Post 6811, a life member of the Durhamville Veterans Auxiliary and a former member of the Cochran Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was a current member of the Durhamville Baptist Church, the Town of Verona Historical Society and was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed camping.
Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Lewis Holmes of Crowell, Texas and Beverly and Ronald Warren of Durhamville; six grandchildren, Wendy (Jeff) Berg, Walter Warren, Wallace (Jennifer) Warren, Dawn (Lawrence) Chandler, Debra (Roman) Rauhala and Scott (Mikki) Speer; eight great-grandchildren, Joshua, Adam Chandler, Paige, Maygan Chandler, Andrew Warren, Nadia, Braeden, Anika Rauhala; Florence ""Cookie"" Simchik, his companion following the death of their spouses and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles and a granddaughter, Christine Marie Speer on June 23, 1973.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday from the Durhamville Baptist Church, with the Pastor Rob Casler, officiating. Spring interment will be made in Glenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida from 3-7 p.m. on Wednesday.
