CANASTOTA >> Richard E. Christman, Sr., 81, of 4279 Canal Road, Canastota, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at Oneida Healthcare, with his family by his side, following a lengthy illness.
He was born on Sept. 15, 1931, in the Lenox Basin area outside Canastota, the son of Bert and Muriel Schmidtka Christman.
Richard has lived in Lenox Basin all of his life, attending the Canastota schools.
He was a veteran of the Korean War
, receiving a Purple Heart
Medal for wounds received in action while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps
Richard did mechanic and auto body work at Sam Finn Motors in Canastota for 22 years.
He enjoyed fishing, and building dune buggies, and was the Crew Chief on his son's racing team at Utica-Rome Speedway.
Richard married Evelyn M. DeVaul on Dec. 11, 1954, in Bridgeport.
Surviving besides his wife, Evelyn, are: one son and daughter-in-law, Richard, Jr., and Debi Christman of Oneida; one daughter and son-in-law, Christine and John Winter of Canastota; one sister and brother-in-law, Judith and Val Seitz of Canastota; two grandchildren, Richard Snyder and Violet Winter; five great-grandsons; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Richard was predeceased by a brother, Robert Christman, and a sister, Joyce Harp.
At Richard's request there will be no calling hours or funeral service. Private burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery, Wampsville, at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are under the supervision of the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Wampsville Volunteer Fire Company, Inc., P.O. Box 163, Wampsville, N.Y. 13163, or to GLAS (Greater Lenox Ambulance Service), P.O. Box 382, Canastota, N.Y. 13032.
