ONEIDA >> Fred T. Tkatch, 90, of 508 Grant Ave. died peacefully Friday morning Jan. 31, 2104 in the Oneida Healthcare ECF where he had been a resident since Jan. 14. Prior to entering the ECF he had been a resident at the Hazel Carpenter home in Oneida for the past 11 months.
Fred was born on Dec. 22, 1923 in Verona, the son of George and Elizabeth Ottenbrite Tkatch. A lifelong resident of the area he graduated from Verona High School and attended Syracuse University.
Fred proudly served with the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant on Jan. 24, 1946.
On Nov. 27, 1947 he married Ann Haslauer in St. Therese of the Infant Jesus Church in Munnsville. Mrs. Tkatch died on Oct. 7, 2010.
Fred had worked as a public accountant for Carlton Shay CPA for 25 years. He then worked for D'Arcangelo and Co. Public Accountants for 10 years before he retired. Following his formal retirement he did some tax work at the office of Harry Hood CPA in Canastota.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Oneida where he had served as a lector and Eucharistic minister, choir member and former member of the parish council. Also very active in the community he was a member of the E. Bart Hanifin Council No. 473 Knights of Columbus, Oneida Elks Lodge BPOE 767, the American Legion Post No. 169, the Oneida Owls Club No. 1606 and the Oneida Moose Lodge No. 421. He was also a member of the National Society of Public Accountants, a former board member and treasurer for the Madison County Historical Society, and had served on the Boards for the Madison County Unit of the American Cancer Society and the Salvation Army.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Craig Arnold of Oneida; and one son and daughter-in-law, David and Deborah Tkatch of Westmoreland, N.H.; five grandchildren, Amy and Scott Jones, Steven Arnold and fiancée Brittney, Martyn Tkatch, Jessica Tkatch and fiancée Marc and Dylan Tkatch; two great-grandchildren, Madden and Pryce Jones and special nephew and his wife John (Priscilla) Tkatch of Central Square and several other nieces and nephews.
Fred was pre-deceased by his parents and his step-mother; Celia Pich Tkatch; his wife, Anna; three brothers, John Tkatch, William Tkatch and Peter Tkatch; and his sister Anna Ernenwein.
The family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the staff of the Extended Care and the staff of the Hazel Carpenter Home for all of the professional care and compassion shown to Fred during this past year.
Funeral Services will begin 9:30 a.m. Tuesday Feb. 4, 2014 with a Prayer Service at the Ironside Funeral Home followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Church Oneida celebrated by the Rev. Richard J. Kapral. Spring Interment with military honors will be made in St. Helena's Cemetery Oneida. Friends are invited and may call 5-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, 2014 at the funeral home 342 Main St., Oneida. The E. Bart Hanifin Council No. 473 Knights of Columbus will meet at 4:45 p.m. Monday to pay their respects for their departed brother. Memorial Contributions in Fred's memory may be made to the Hazel Carpenter Home 533 Main Street Oneida, NY 13421.
