FRANKLIN, IND. >> George Lewis Heckman, 80, of the Franklin United Methodist Community passed away Sunday.
He was born June 12, 1932 in Pittsburgh, Pa. He married Shirley Jean (Comins) Heckman on Nov. 29, 1981 in Rochester, N.Y. She preceded him in death on June 2, 2008. He was a 1971 graduate of Kent State University where he received his B.A. in English. He had taught high school English. He worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs in New York State and Chicago and also was an evaluator for HUD in Indianapolis. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He had served as a volunteer for Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin for 15 years in the medical records department.
Survivors include his stepchildren, Craig Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo., Brian Smith (Carla) of Baldwinsville, N.Y., Debbie Morgan of Danville, Ind.; four step-grandchildren, Kyle Smith, Brian Smith Jr., Casey Smith, and Chelsea Smith; a sister, Helen McIntyre of Seabring, Fla., and close friends Herman and Christine Barnard of Franklin. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lois (Hayner) Heckman; wife, Shirley Heckman, and brother, Robert Edward Heckman. The Rev. Roger Gifford will conduct a service Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 South U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin with visitation from 4 p.m. till service time at the mortuary. A graveside service with military honors will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Oneida Castle Cemetery in Oneida, N.Y. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.swartzmortuary.com.
