ONEIDA >> Paul N. Tinello at the age of 102 of 428 W. Railroad St., Oneida, N.Y., died Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014 at his residence.
He was born in Troy N.Y. on Dec. 14, 1911 a son of Antonio and Maria Russomanno Tinello. He married Marion Smothers in 1945 at St. Peter's Cathedral in Richmond, Va. while he was in the service. She died in January of 1994.
Paul had a very impressive war record, serving in the US Army Air Corps during WWII from 1942-1945, where he was a tail gunner on B 24 air planes. He flew 71 missions with the Flying Tigers under General Chenault in China, Burma and India known as the "Hump." His longest mission lasting over 13 hours. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Bronze Star, American Theater Ribbon, and Air Medal with one Bronze Cluster.
Paul lived in Oneida most of his life and retired in 1974 after 40 years as superintendent of the grounds at Oneida Limited. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Oneida, N.Y.
Surviving is one sister, Mrs. Rose (John) Paraziale of Minoa, N.Y. and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by one brother, Nicholas and two sisters, Jennie Capparelli and Mary Tinello.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at St. Joseph's Church, Oneida, N.Y. at 10 a.m., where a mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Richard Kapral, pastor. Burial will be made in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Oneida, N.Y. There are no calling hours but relatives and friends are invited to attend the mass. The Fiore Funeral Home, 303 Main St., Oneida, N.Y. is in charge of the arrangements.
