CANASTOTA >> Robert Jewett Comings, 98, formerly of 306 High St., Canastota, died on Thursday, July 10, 2014, at the Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, following a lengthy illness.
He was born on June 9, 1916, in Eau Claire, Wis., the son of George H. and Catherine Mary Evans Comings.
Bob served in the U.S. Army in World War II from 1941 to 1945, and in the U.S. Foreign Service from 1949 to 1953.
He represented the Farm Family Insurance Companies in Madison, Chenango and Onondaga counties for 30 years, retiring in 1985.
Bob married Perra F. Johnson of Sumter, S.C., on Aug. 4, 1951, in Berlin, Germany. He and Perra lived in Canastota since 1955. Perra predeceased him on Sept. 23, 2007.
He was a member of the United Church of Canastota.
Bob is a past member and past president of the Canastota Rotary Club, and is a Paul Harris Fellow. He is, also, a past member of the Madison Co. Farm Bureau.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Harold Comings and Judith (Coye) Comings of Lakeland, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan C. DiFiore and James J. DiFiore of Baddeck, Nova Scotia; a sister Anne (Comings) Thomas of Sackets Harbor, N.Y.; sisters-in-law, Pauline (Poole, widow of brother Philip) of Coventryville, NY, and Lorinne Delorme (sister of Perra) of Sumter S.C.; brother-in-law, John W. Johnson (brother of Perra) of Sumter, S.C.; four grandchildren, Andrew and Itacyara (da Silva) of Sao Luis, Brazil, David and Judith (Spink) of Wahpeton, N.D., Daniel and Emily (Piatt) of Lakeland, Fla., and Joseph and Kaylyn (Harding) of Cape Coral, Fla.; and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Perra; his brothers, James, Philip, and George; and his sisters, Ruth C. Gibson and Catherine C. Bickford.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. The Rev. Charles F. Vollmer, pastor of the United Church of Canastota, will officiate. At Bob's request there will be no calling hours. Contributions in his memory, if desired, may be may be made to the United Church of Canastota, 144 Center St., Canastota NY, 13032, GLAS (Greater Lenox Ambulance Service), PO Box 382, Canastota, NY, or to the Canastota Public Library, 102 W. Center Street, Canastota, NY, with envelopes available at the funeral home. Robert has donated his body to Upstate Medical University.
