ONEIDA >> Robert S. Curtiss, 84, of 210 Washington Ave., died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born May 8, 1928, in Oneida Hospital, the son of Stanley B. and Ruth Brooks Curtiss of Oneida.
He attended Oneida schools, graduating from Oneida High School.
During high school, Robert worked as a clerk and later a trainee pharmacist for Parkell Drug Co.
He was also employed at Brennan's Appliance as an electronic repair man.
In September 1950, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served at California's Mather Air Force Base until honorably discharged in September of 1954.
He worked as an announcer for WKAL Rome for two years.
He attended Syracuse University on a G.I. bill and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology.
He also attended Syracuse University for graduate studies.
In 1966, Robert joined the faculty at Upstate Medical, employed by the Department of Psychology as a researcher.
He retired in 1988, after 21 years of service.
Following retirement, from 1989-2008, Robert spent time volunteering for both Oneida Little League and Pop Warner football as an event announcer.
He is survived by his longtime close personal friend and caregiver, Leila Lindsley of Oneida.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at Oneida Castle Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Smith officiating.
There will be no hours of public visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of the Coolican-McSweeney Funeral Home, 322 Washington Ave., Oneida, N.Y.
