CANASTOTA >> Russell A. "Russ" Rielle, Sr., 96, of Canastota, died on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, following a lengthy illness.
He was born on Sept. 17, 1917, in Plattsburg, a son of Dennis and Grace (Hurtubise) Rielle.
Russ spent his early years in Plattsburg, graduating from Mount Assumption Institute in 1935. He later graduated from Plattsburg State Normal School in 1938, with a teaching degree. He later lived in Fayetteville, moving to Canastota in 1950.
He is a WW II veteran, serving overseas as a US Navy pilot.
Russ owned and operated a landscaping business, Hermitage Gardens, in Canastota for many years, retiring in 1995.
He was a longtime member of the Canastota Rotary Club, the Canastota Development Corporation, and was instrumental in the development of the Canastota Industrial Park, the Industrial Development Agency, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Albany.
Russ was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota.
He enjoyed stamp and coin collecting, and local history.
Russ married Chrissie J. George on June 13, 1943, in Plattsburg.
Surviving besides his wife, Chrissie are: two sons and a daughter-in-law, Russell Rielle, Jr., of Tocoa, Ga., and Steven and Phyllis Rielle of Kirkville; a sister-in-law, Judith Rielle of Hyde Park; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Russ was predeceased by a daughter, Lynne Rielle-Knaack; and three brothers, Dennis S. Rielle, Warren Rielle, and Donald Rielle.
Funeral services will be held 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2014, at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., Canastota. The Rev. Anthony F. Tosti will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, prior to the service, from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home, 201 James St., Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to the Canastota Public Library, 102 W. Center St., Canastota, N.Y. 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
