Henry J. "Hank" Leo Sr. Obituary
ONEIDA >> Henry J. "Hank" Leo, Sr., 75, Broad Street, died Sunday morning, July 21, 2013, in the Oneida Healthcare Center, with his loving family by his side, where he had been a patient for the past six days.
Born in Oneida, on Aug. 22, 1937, he was a son of Enrico and Catherine Carnevale Leo. A lifelong resident of the area, Hank was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1955 and then entered the United States Navy, where he served for two years aboard the USS Pawcatuck. He married Diane Peters in St. Joseph's Church on Aug. 2, 1958.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Mr. Leo began his career in federal service with the United States Department of Defense, which spanned 37 years, and where he served as the Northeast Director of Information Telecommunications. Following his retirement from government, he served as the general manager of Kanon Valley Country Club for eight years.
Hank was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church, a member of the Powhatan Club, where he served as the volunteer chef for many years, the Oneida Citizens Hose, Company No. 1, where he served as the secretary for eight years, the Oneida Elks Lodge No. 767 BPOE, the Order of the Owls, Oneida Nest 1606, the American Legion, Oneida Post 169, the Oneida School Board of Education, where he served as president and DKUV (German Mutual Sick Benefit Society).
Professionally, Mr. Leo was a member of the Syracuse Federal Executive Association, where he served as secretary, treasurer, vice-president and president, the Armed Forces Communications Electronics Association, the Federal Personnel Association and the Hancock Field Community Relations Committee.
Hank will be remembered as an avid fisherman, cook, golfer, hunter and caretaker of his vegetable garden.
Surviving besides his wife, Diane, are three daughters and one son-in-law, Debbie and Donald Kline, Sandra Leo and Terri Leo, all of Oneida; one son, Henry J. Leo, Jr. of Oneida; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Laura Clark of Munnsville, Anita Miller of Canton and Mari-Ane and Rick Burnette of Strasburg, Va.; five grandchildren, Kelli Claflin, Don Claflin, Rich Hackford, Ashleigh Torrey and Gregg Torrey; two great-grandchildren, Dominick Claflin and Hailey Centner; several nieces, nephews, cousins and one aunt. He was predeceased by a brother, Robert Leo and a sister, Susie Jelleff.
Funeral services will be held 9:15 a.m., Thursday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida and 10 a.m. from St. Joseph's Church, where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverends Richard Kapral, pastor and Michael Carmola, a longtime friend and classmate. Interment with full military honors will be made in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home, 3-7 p.m., Wednesday.
