Howard Roscoe Reed, 70, of Ennis Road, died on Saturday, May 19, 2012 at his residence.
Born in Ponca City, Okla. on Jan. 12, 1942, he was a son of Howard G. and Violet Bullard Reed. A resident of the area since 1989, moving from Newburgh, he was a graduate of Oklahoma Schools and attended SUNY Plattsburg. He married Sandra McKay in Newburgh on May 17, 1986.
Prior to his retirement, he was a correctional officer for the NYS Department of Corrections at Sing Sing, Fishkill and Oneida facilities. Howard retired after 21 years serving from 1959-1980 in the United States Air Force and during the Vietnam War, as a staff sergeant. He was a member of the Durhamville Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and head usher. He enjoyed rock hounding, metal detecting, gardening, traveling, fishing, reading and writing and his family and church family.
Surviving besides his wife, Sandy are his mother, Violet of Ponca City, Okla.; four daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Leonard Collins of Munnsville, Stacey and Chris Jackson of AppleValley, Calif., Nicole and John Kinnear of Huntsville, Utah and Gabrielle and Cesar Cavani of Jackson, N.J.; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Aaron and Christine Reed of Ireland and Ryan S. Reed of Salt Lake City, Utah; one sister, Sherry Kitchen of Ponca City, Okla.; one brother and sister-in-law, Derryl and Mona Reed of Ponca City, Okla.; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at the Durhamville Baptist Church with Pastor Rob Casler, officiating. Interment with full military honors will be held at Glenwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Thursday.
