Stewart Winterton RALEIGH, N.C. >> Stewart “Stew” Winterton, 96, passed away on Jan. 7, 2018 in Raleigh, N.C. after a long illness. Born Dec. 26, 1921 to Raymond and Mary Winterton, he was one of six children. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Margaret, son Thomas Michael, his sisters Marion (Winterton) Archibee and Lois (Winterton) Lacell, and brothers Roger and Raymond Winterton. He is survived by his sister, Ellen (Winterton) Krumbach of Brooksville, Fla., and children, Stewart James Winterton and wife Ann Borowski Winterton, Joseph and Susan Winterton, Gerald and Angie Winterton, John (Jack) and Andrea Winterton and Kathleen (Winterton) and David Peterson. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Colin Winterton, Brittany (Winterton) Ottolini, Danielle Winterton, Brianne Winterton, Derek Winterton, Blake Winterton, Logan Winterton, Casey Peterson, Amber (Winterton) Newton, Ronnie Winterton and Kyle Peterson. He had nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Stew will be remembered for his incredible tenacity. First a farmer; he never had the opportunity to finish school as he worked the farm full time. He was a self-taught mechanic, a skill which served him well throughout the years. In 1942 he enlisted in the Marine Corps and was stationed in Guadalcanal in the First Marine Division serving under Chesty Puller in the South Pacific. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service. During the war he married Margaret Mary Durant. After the war they owned a farm, a Gulf Service Station, and in later years he worked as a plant manager for Foamold Inc. Stew retired in 1983 and enjoyed golf, which included working at “Peters Patch,” time in Florida with friends and family in North Carolina. The family would like to express their appreciation for all the family and friends’ support during his illness. The family will hold a service TBD at later date in Vernon, N.Y.
