ONEIDA >> Verna M. Picciano, 95, formerly of 512 Lenox Ave., Oneida died Sunday morning Oct. 27, 2013 at the Katherine Luther Home in Clinton where she has been a resident since 2008.

Verna was born on March 22, 1918 in Nanticoke, Pa., a daughter of Peter and Mary Plezia Klish.
She came to Durhamville as a young child and was educated in the Oneida Schools.
When she turned 18 her dream for Hollywood to become a model took her to New York City where she enrolled in Helena Rubinstein School of Cosmetics. While taking cosmetology classes she was employed at Ewing's Photographers.
She fell in love with and married John A. Picciano on Nov. 4, 1946 in New York City. A marriage that lasted for 49 years until John died Dec. 15, 1995.
Following her marriage she returned to Canastota and went to work for 14 years for the New System Dry Cleaners and Furriers in Canastota. She then became the manager of Cramer's Dress Shop in Oneida for eight years. She then went back to learn hair design at the Conover School of Hair Design and upon her completion she opened Vern's Coiffures in the Hotel Oneida which she owned and operated for 22 years.
Retirement did not set well with Verna and at age 72 she went back to work as a sales clerk with the Herb Philipsons store in Oneida for 14 years until she retired at the age of 86. When she was 75 she was recognized as the Employee of the Year at Herb Philipsons.
Verna was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Oneida where she was a choir member, Eucharistic minister and served on the Altar Care Committee.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, John M. and Pandora Picciano of Bellingham, Mass.; two sisters, Frances Guy of Oneida and Amelia Wittman of Santa Maria, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Arlene Klish, Dorothy Klish and many, many nieces and nephews.
She was pre-deceased by her brothers, Leo, John, Alphonse, Otto, Benjamin and Felex Klish and half-brother, John Smericki.
Verna's funeral will be held Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013 beginning with a 9:30 a.m. Prayer Service at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc. followed by a 10 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Joseph's Church celebrated by Rev. Richard J. Kapral. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Oneida. Friends are invited and may call Friday from 4-6 p.m. at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Church Memorial Fund 121 St. Joseph's Place Oneida N.Y. 13421.
