CANASTOTA >> Mariano J. "Marion" "Budda" Buda, 91, of 9417 Lewis Point Road, Canastota died on Saturday, March 15, 2014, at the VA Medical Center, Syracuse, following a lengthy illness.
He was born on April 6, 1922, in Canastota, a son of Salvatore and Josephine Pagano Buda.
Marion was a life resident of Canastota, attending the Canastota Schools, where he enjoyed wrestling.
He was a rural letter carrier with the US Postal Service in Canastota for 34 years, retiring in 1985.
Marion was a WW II veteran, serving overseas in the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart, and was a prisoner of war for seven months.
He was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota, the Canastota Civic Club, and the American Legion Charles Miller Post No. 140 in Canastota.
Marion enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. He was an avid fan and supporter of his grandchildren, and Canastota Athletics.
He married Yola J. Tuller on March 23, 1946, in Canastota. Yola died on March 28, 1985.
Surviving are: one daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Arthur Costie of Canastota; one brother and sister-in-law, Anthony (Tony) and Lucille Buda of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Jennie Herlan of Canastota, and Maggie Girolamo of East Syracuse; two grandchildren, James and Patti Jaquin, and Vicki and Scott Weis; seven great-grandchildren, Colton Jaquin, Cheyenne Jaquin, Cierra Jaquin, Chance Jaquin, Cutter Jaquin, Cody Weis, and Ashlee Weis; as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and by a special friend, Janith Ryan of Rome. Marion was pre-deceased by a great-granddaughter, Mercedes Weis; four brothers, Michael Buda, Salvatore Buda, Jr., Vincent "Butch" Buda, and an infant brother; and three sisters, Angelica Buda, Katie Ariola, and Frances Gardino.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, at St. Agatha's Church, Canastota, where a funeral mass will be held. The Rev. Stephen P. Wirkes, pastor, will officiate. Entombment will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to St. Agatha's Church, 329 N. Peterboro St., Canastota, N.Y. 13032, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
