1919 - 2014 | Obituary Condolences
WAMPSVILLE >> Charles J. Stankivitz, Sr., 95, of 102 Daniels Drive, Wampsville, died Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Oneida Healthcare Extended Care Facility, following a brief illness.
He was born on Feb. 10, 1919, in Canastota, a son of Dyonizy and Barbara Antonik Stankivitz.
Charlie spent his early years in Canastota, and was a 1937 graduate of Canastota High School, later graduating from Powelson Business School, Syracuse, in 1940. He has lived in Wampsville since 1957.
He worked for the O.M. Edwards Company in Syracuse for 26 years, retiring in 1987. He had previously worked for the Prosperity Company in Syracuse, First Trust and Deposit in Canastota, and had, also, been the village clerk and village treasurer.
Charlie enjoyed playing baseball and football during and after high school, playing the clarinet and saxophone in his brother, Ed's, orchestra in the area, as well as reading, doing crossword puzzles, and spending time with his family.
He was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota.
Charlie was a World War II veteran serving overseas in the U.S. Army.
He married Madalyn Yorton on May 1, 1954, in St. Agatha's Church, Canastota. Madalyn died on Aug. 30, 2009.
Surviving are: one son, Charles J. Stankivitz, Jr. of Neenah, Wis.; three grandchildren, Kathryn Zastrow and her husband, Curt, Daniel C. Stankivitz, and Amy T. Stankivitz; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Charlie was predeceased by a son, Daniel J. Stankivitz, who died in 1987; two brothers, Eugene Stankivitz, and Edward Stankivitz; and a sister, Jennie Stankivitz.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, at St. Agatha's Church, Canastota, where a funeral mass will be held. The Rev. Stephen P. Wirkes, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to the , P.O. Box 7, East Syracuse, N.Y. 13057, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
