CANASTOTA >> Neil P. "Nelson" Block, 50, of 121 Center St., Canastota, died on Monday, March 24, 2014, at his home, following a lengthy illness.
He was born on May 20, 1963, in Bethpage, Long Island, the son of Arnold "Arnie" Block and Carol Freeman Block.
Nelson spent his early years in Vernon, graduating from VVS High School. He later lived in Utica, and has lived in Canastota for the past 10 years.
He worked for Loretto Nursing Home as director of facilities in Syracuse, and had previously worked for the Oneida Hospital, and the Presbyterian Home in New Hartford.
Nelson loved to cook, learning about and using computers, and his cat "Sylvester." Every Sunday he would cook the "family dinner." He loved his family and especially enjoyed the holidays!
He was a member of St. Agatha's Church in Canastota.
Surviving are: his mother, Carol Freeman Block of Canastota; one brother, Daniel Block of Palm Desert, Calif.; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Marlene and Wade Adkinson of Wagner, S.C., Paulette and Lewis "Bill" Obit of Liverpool, Cynthia Block-Taylor of Charlotte, N.C., Kathleen Rapasadi of Buffalo; and special brothers-in-law, John Rapasadi of Canastota, and Peter Snow of Clinton. He had two very special friends -- Peggy Patricia of Vernon and Elaine Sarem of Plattsburgh; as well as several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, March 31, 2014, at St. Agatha's Church, Canastota, where a funeral mass will be held. The Rev. Stephen P. Wirkes, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Agatha's Cemetery, Canastota. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at the J. Homer Ball Funeral Home, Inc., 201 James St., Canastota. In his memory, contributions may be made to the , 6390 Fly Road, 2nd Floor, East Syracuse, N.Y. 13057 as well as the Kidney Foundation, with envelopes available at the funeral home.
