ONEIDA >> Vincent F. "Pif" Paone, 90, of Garfield Avenue, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014 in the Oneida Healthcare Center, where he had been a patient for the past day.
Born in Canastota on Jan. 20, 1924, he was the son of Antonio and Nina Stagnitta Paone. A lifelong resident of the area, Mr. Paone was educated in Canastota schools. He married Cecelia Fura in St. Agatha's Church on March 25, 1950. Mrs. Paone died on Sept. 14, 2005.
Prior to his retirement, Pif was an operating engineer with the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local #545. Following his retirement, he was employed with the former Oneida Valley National Bank, as the bank courier, until his retirement in 1986. Pif was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus, E. Bart Hanifin Council #473.
In early retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, refinishing antique furniture, vegetable gardening and yard work, puttering in his tool shed and helping his sons-in-law with many remodeling projects. He really enjoyed life, the company of his beloved family, and meeting up with his many friends for breakfast, lunch or coffee.
Surviving are, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Nena (Richard) Crowne of Oneida and Susan (John) Mulroy of Lebanon; 4 grandchildren, Amy (Robert) Demarco of Liverpool, Jeanette (Kraig) Hatch of Oneida, Rachael (Vincent) Hood of Tuxedo Park and Chad Smith of Oneida; 8 great-grandchildren, Kara, Daryl "DD", Laura and Emma Hatch, Robbie and Jack DeMarco, Hannah Smith and Karl Hood; 3 sisters-in-law, Mary Fura Salm of Bradenton, Fla., Jane Valerio Paone of Chittenango and Joanne Mitchell Paone of Canastota and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Salvatore, Charles and Joseph; 4 sisters, Antonina "Nena" Zakala, Natalina "Nellie" Gleeson, Gaetana "Ida" Tornatore and recently, Catarina "Kate" Locastro; 4 brothers-in-law, Anthony Tornatore, Steven Zakala, George Gleeson and Angelo Locastro and two sisters-in-law, Frances Count Paone and Virginia Grasso Paone.
Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main Street, Oneida, and 10 p.m. from St. Joseph's Church, where the funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Richard Kapral, pastor. Interment will be made in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Members of the Knights of Columbus, E. Bart Council No. 473 will meet 2:45 p.m., Tuesday at the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc. for a prayer service in the memory of the late Vincent F. Paone, a longtime member of the council.
