VERNON >> Agnes "Nessie" Graves, 85, of Columbia, Tenn., formerly of Vernon, N.Y., passed away on April 29, 2014. She enjoyed cooking, reading, sewing, and working the New York Times crossword puzzle. Once her husband retired, the two traveled extensively throughout the US and Scotland. After the death of her husband in 2000, she took pleasure in maintaining her property with her riding lawnmower and caring for her dog.
Nessie was the daughter of the late Torquil MacLeod and Agnes MacLean MacLeod. She graduated from Sherrill High School in 1946 and married Norman E. Graves in 1951. The couple resided on the Graves family farm where they raised their four children, Cathy, Jeffrey, Jan and John.
Survivors include her daughters, Jan Graves and Cathy Graves, both of Columbia, Tenn.; son, Jeffrey (Julie) Graves of Dunlap, Ill.; grandchildren, Jennifer (Ryan) Miller of Dunlap, Ill., Sean Raftery of Columbia, Emme Graves of Dunlap, Ill., Christina Graves of Peoria, Ill., Lainey Graves of Dunlap, Ill.; daughter-in-law, Sandra Graves of Columbia, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Jack Miller, Brady Miller, Lillian Cooper; brother, Robert (Evie) MacLeod of Ithaca, N.Y.; brother-in-law, Fred Totten of Gouverneur, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nessie was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Sherrill, N.Y. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Norman E. Graves; son, John Andrew Graves; and sister, Janet Totten.
A graveside service will be held at the Oneida Castle Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 7. A reception will follow at Sherrill American Legion Post 230 from 2-5 p.m.
