SHERRILL >> Leroy "Bill" Ashley, 85, passed away Jan. 31, 2014 at Faxton-St Luke's Hospital peacefully after a long illness.
He was born on Jan. 24, 1929 at the family home to Roy A. Ashley and Ruth M. Peek Ashley. Bill was educated in Clark Mills and Clinton schools.
He was a member of the United States Navy from June, 1946 – May, 1948. During his enlistment he served aboard the USS Houston and the Wisconsin. He worked on the farm of George Sawner & Sons from 1948-1961. Bill was employed at Oneida Limited for 29 years where he held the position of advisory board chairman for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 230 in Sherrill and the VFW Post 9591 in Clinton.
On Oct. 9, 1948 he married Beverly Scouten. During their union they were blessed with five children, Ginny Saville (Brian), Gail Reber (Don), Kevin Ashley, Carl Ashley and Keith Ashley (Pam). Beverly pre-deceased him on Oct. 3, 1963. He married Sandra Siler on April 18, 1998.
Bill is survived by 17 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two step-children, Stephanie Fisher (John) and Stephen Siler (Anne) and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two sisters, Beverly Ashley Parry and Marilyn Ashley Flint; and his parents.
Family and friends are invited to call on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home Inc., 464 Sherrill Road, Sherrill. Bill's funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home, Sherrill. Burial with full military honors will follow in Crown Hill Memorial Park, Kirkland, N.Y.
