D. Thomas Hinson

D. Thomas Hinson, 35, of Athens, GA and formerly of Sylvania, GA passed away late Saturday evening in Americus, GA due to cardiac arrest from a preexisting heart condition.
Thomas was born to Cherri Dixon and David Hinson in Augusta, GA and was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Sylvania. He resided the past 17 years in Athens where he was employed as a realtor with Coldwell Banker Upchurch Realty. He was a former police officer and had attended the University of Georgia where he studied finance, and was well-known for having been the owner of George Gibson's Menswear, until its closing in April of 2013. He was heavily involved in several local organizations: as a member of the Classic City Rotary Club, and the Athens Jaycees, the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce; also serving on the Board of Directors of the Classic Center Authority, and as an appointee of the Mayor's Economic Development Task Force. Thomas was an avid sports fan who refereed such sports as baseball and basketball on a collegiate level and for the Georgia High School Association. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Adah Love and John McGhee Hinson, Sr. and maternal grandfather, M.G. "Bill" Dixon.
He is survived by his parents, Cherri and David Hinson of Sylvania; a sister and brother-in-law, Rachel H. and Russell Youngblood of Statesboro; a brother and sister-in-law, Rob W. and Elissa Hinson of Hong Kong; his maternal grandmother, Barbara Buford Dixon of Rome.
Visitation will be held Tuesday evening at the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church of Sylvania from 5:00-7:00pm.
Memorial services will be Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at 11:00am in First United Methodist Church of Sylvania.
