Glyndon Hatchell Obituary

Dr. Glyndon (Glyn) Elbert Hatchell, age 83, of Athens, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2014.
Born August 12, 1930 in Denham Springs, La., he was the son of the late Gradye P. and Vernie Barnett Hatchell.
He graduated from Denham Springs High School in 1947 and from Louisiana State University in 1952 with a B.S. in Agriculture. In 1968 he earned a PhD. in Forestry from Duke University. He married Dorothy Jane Stocks in 1958. Glyn and Dot met through mutual friends while both working in Bogalusa, LA. During their early marriage, they especially enjoyed traveling throughout Louisiana to find the best Cajun restaurants and antique shops. They moved throughout the south over the years due to Glyn's transfers with the U. S. Forest Service and settled in Athens, GA in 1975.
Glyn spent his career with the U.S. Forest Service as a Research Forester studying the effects of erosion and insects on loblolly pine trees. He published many highly cited papers which are still relevant today.
Glyn was a member of the Athens First Presbyterian Church. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing in remote areas of Louisiana and later Georgia. Glyn was a member of the National Audubon Society and participated in the yearly bird count around Athens, Georgia. During his later years, Glyn was an avid collector of antiques and folk art.
Glyn was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Jane Hatchell. Glyn was married to Elizabeth Lohse for the last 3 months of his life. Family members include a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Perry Crenshaw of Toccoa; sons and daughters-in-laws, Gary and Kate Hatchell of Piedmont, SC and Brian and Diana Hatchell of West Richland, WA; and grandchildren, Jared Smith, Kayla Hatchell, and Hannah Hatchell.
Glyn's family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Wells, Dr. Greg Ware, Dr. Zuoheng Fan, Dr. Gary Walton, Dr. Amit Shah, Dr. Crosby, Dr. Petros Nikolinakos and Dr. John Kipp for their compassionate care over the last few years. Special thanks also go to the following of St. Mary's Hospital: Dr. Ernst, Dr. Robert Meyer and the wonderful nursing staff of the 4th floor; their care for Glyn was exceptional during his recent illness. Thank you to The Oaks nursing staff and United Hospice for their extensive attention and expert care during Glyn's short stay during the last few days of his life.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Whitlock Mortuary Chapel in Toccoa, GA.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Audubon Society.
Whitlock Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
