Harriet Thomas Walker, 86, died Sunday, December 15, 2013.
A native of Africa, she was the daughter of the late Rev. Harlan and Mabel Munsell Thomas. She grew up on the mission field in Sierra Leone, where her parents ran a school and hospital. Harriet was married in a dress made from the parachute that saved the life of her husband, Harold Walker, a veteran of World War II
, and the couple lived in Alaska before it became a state. A retired school teacher
, Harriet spent many years educating youth in church and school settings and earned her Ph.D in Education from the University of Idaho. She wrote articles, devotionals and books drawn from the life and experiences of her family.
Survivors include sons, Thomas Walker and wife, Kristin of Souix Falls, SD, David Walker and wife, June of Clark Fork, Idaho, and Stephen Walker and wife, Pamela of Bern, KA; daughter, Elizabeth Beck and husband, Randy of Bishop, GA; sister Evelyn Voris of Bishop; grandchildren, Ryan Walker, Karen Seifert, Nathan Walker, Mycah Borisova, Justus Walker, Myleah Rydberg, Meran Rhodes, Nadya Walker, Victor Walker, Vasya Walker, Misha Walker, Tim Walker, Mary Walker, Kaitlyn Beck, and Kristina Beck, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 18th at Bishop United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Allen Gunby officiating. Interment will follow at the old High Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome gifts to the Bishop United Methodist Church.
