Mary Roberts, 87, of Athens, GA passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014.
Mary was born to school teachers and farmers, Lawrence and Ada Troehmel Royer in Browning, Illinois on November 17, 1926. She graduated with a degree in Home Economics from the University of Illinois in 1948 and married James William Roberts in the same year.
Mary worked as a dietician for Cook County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois before a career pause to be a devoted wife and mother in 1952. Her husband's career took them to many places including Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Canada, California, South Carolina, and finally to Athens, Georgia. Following the sudden death of her husband in 1985, Mary's career resumed with Athens Regional Medical Center working in the business office and IT Department retiring in 2010 at the age of 82.
During her years in Athens she was an active member and Deacon in the First Christian Church of Athens, volunteer for Reading for the Blind, and other Athens organizations.
Mary was preceded in death by a brother, John D. Roberts of Athens, GA.
Mary is survived by daughters, Melinda Jones of Cuyahoga Falls, OH and Becky Savage and partner, Hudi Johnson of Rustin, LA; son, Doug Roberts and wife, Beth of Moundsville, WVA; grandchildren, David and Amelia Jones, Nicholas Roberts, Susan Humphries, Swede Savage, and Stewart Johnson.
Memorial Service will be held 3PM Thursday, February 27th at the First Christian Church of Athens.
The family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers, neighbors, and friends for the loving care given to Mary in her final journey.
