Carroll Boyd Obituary

Athens - Carroll W. Boyd, 89, died unexpectedly Friday, Feb. 13.
A native of Forsyth County, Georgia, he was the son of the late Leonard and Eula Light Boyd. He attended Young Harris College and graduated from the University of Georgia. Following employment as county welfare director in Gwinnett County, Georgia, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945. He left the service in California and decided to stay, first attending Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley and later receiving a master's degree in social work from the University of California. He worked in the Contra Costa County Social Service department, retiring as assistant county welfare director in 1976 after 32 years of service.
He was married to the former Bernice Wages of Lawrenceville until her death in 1977. They had no children. In 1981, he was married to the former Dorothy Larimer of Albany, California, instantly acquiring a family of four daughters, two sons-in-law and two grandchildren. After living in his home for five years, they moved to Athens, where they joined St. James United Methodist Church, Jolly Good Timers and the Fellowship Sunday School class, which he taught for several years. He volunteered at the Athens Homeless Shelter and Heritage nursing home, was a member of the Athens Elks Lodge and a 59-year member of the Alpharetta Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Boyd; daughters and sons-in-law, Judi and Eric Lund of Athens, Susan and David Bethell-Larimer of Henderson, Nevada, and Lisa and Peter Burtis of Mendocino, Calif., Nancy Nelson and children, Raquel and John, of Grass Valley, Calif. Also surviving are granddaughter, Paula Carabello of Oakland, California, and great grandson, Richard Lund of Grass Valley, Calif.
He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Grace Boyd Ruff and Dr. William Ruff of Bogart, many first cousins in Georgia as well as nieces and nephews, including Dianne (and Dr. Patrick) Morrison of Athens, Deborah (wife of the late Dr. Boyd Ruff) of Athens, Carol (and William) Messina of Franklin, N.C., William Ruff, Jr., (and Betty) of Bogart and Pam (and Dr. Joel) Perchik of Jackson Tenn., 15 great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at St. James United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kent A. Reynolds officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery, in Roswell, Ga. Pallbearers will be Eric Lund, David Bethell-Larimer, William Ruff, Jr., Dr. Patrick Morrison, David Morrison and Andrew Morrison. Members of the Wesley Fellowship Bible class are invited to serve as honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at Bernstein Funeral Home and on line tributes may be made at www.Mem.com.
