Evelyn Shelnutt Obituary

Evelyn B. "Eve" Shelnutt died on April 7, 2015, in Athens, Georgia. Born in 1941 in Spartanburg, South Carolina to James M. and Evelyn B. Waldrop, she was the middle child of three sisters, Cynthia, herself, and Anne. Ms Shelnutt was a prolific writer and authored three collections of short stories with Black Sparrow Press and four poetry collections plus a fourth short story collection with Carnegie Melon Press.

Ms Shelnutt attended Carson-Neuman College and Furman University, receiving her B.A. in English from the University of Cincinnati in 1972. Under the auspices of the Randall Jarrell Fellowship, she studied creative writing with Fred Chappell at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro, obtaining her M.F.A. in 1973. She had a successful career as a professor of creative writing, teaching at Western Michigan University, the University of Pittsburgh, Ohio University and the College of the Holly Cross in Worcester, MA.

A loving and thoughtful individual, Ms Shelnutt was known for her mentorship of numerous young people, amongst them Fred and Frieda Obeng-Ampofo and Jacqueline Cruz. Ms Shelnutt is survived by her son, Greg, her granddaughter, Emily, and her sisters, Cynthia Collins, Anne Allen, and Erika Goldwaite.

A private memorial service will be held in Ms Shelnutt's home in Athens at noon Saturday, April 11. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy are encouraged in memory of Eve Shelnutt to either St. Mary's Foundation, 1230 Baxter Street, Athens, GA 30606, or UNC-Greensboro's Creative Writing program (send a check payable to "UNCG Jarrell Creative Writing Scholarship" to: UNC-G University Advancement, PO Box 26170, Greensboro, NC 27402).
