Albert "Mitch" Hoyt Mitchell Jr., age 73, of Athens, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012.
A native of Marietta, Mr. Mitchell was the son of the late Albert Hoyt Mitchell Sr. and Minnie Lou Hill Mitchell. He graduated from Lanier High School, in Macon, received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University, and received his master's degree from the University of Georgia.
Mr. Mitchell served in the U.S. Navy for 28 years and retired at the rank of Captain. He commanded the U.S.S. Santa Barbara, the U.S.S. Caloosahatchee, and the U.S.S. Yellowstone, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and Navy Commendation Medal during this time.
Mr. Mitchell also served as an adjunct instructor at Gainesville State College, in Watkinsville, and Athens Technical College. He was a loyal Bulldog fan and a member of Athens Kiwanis Club and the First Baptist Church of Athens.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Margaret Muth Mitchell; daughter, Michelle Mitchell O'Neil, and her husband, Michael, of Haverhill, Mass.; son, Albert "Trey" Hoyt Mitchell III, and his wife, Erika, of Shipman, Va.; step-sons, Gregory Muth, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Columbia, S.C., C. Richard Muth, of Denver, Colo., and Michael A. Muth, and his wife, Julie, of Lincolnshire, Ill.; sister, Mary Alice Mitchell, of Mableton, and seven grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, January 3, at Bernstein Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 4, at the First Baptist Church of Athens, with the Rev. Ray Austin and Dr. Paul Baxley officiating. Interment will be at a later date, in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Mary's Hospice, P.O. Box 6588, Athens, GA 30604, or to N.E. GA Cancer Care, 3320 Old Jefferson Rd. Ste.#700, Athens, GA 30607.
