Frederick Benson Leathers Jr., age 80, of Athens, passed away on Sunday, October 28, 2012.
Born in Athens, Fred was the son of Pearl Wells Leathers and Frederick Benson Leathers Sr. He participated in the Athens YMCA programs and was a leader at the Athens Y Camp. He was agraduate of Athens High School and played on the undefeated basketball team of 1950. Fred graduated from the University of Georgia and was a member of the freshman basketball team, as well as a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, Fred returned to Athens to make his home. He was a member of the Athens Touchdown Club, serving as president, and a member of Gridiron, Georgia Student Educational Fund, the Athens Country Club, and the First United Methodist Church. He served on the Athens City Council and the Personnel Board for the City.
Fred was known for his compassion for family and his devotion to friends. He was a warm, caring, and kind person, and enjoyed sending beautifully-expressed notes to those he loved.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Nan Richardson Leathers; daughter, Fran Davis, and her husband, Jay, of Watkinsville, and her children, Ross and Grant Crowell; son, Ben Leathers, and his wife, Lee, of Milton, and their children, Coleman and Bennett; and brother, Chester Leathers, and his wife, Joanna, of Gainesville, Fla., and their children. Also surviving are a sister-in-law, Claire James, of Athens; nieces, Catherine Langley, and her husband, Larry, of Charlotte, N.C., and their children, Lauren and Stewart, and Ashley Laney, and her husband, Sterling, of Greenville, S.C.; and many cousins from the Leathers and Wells families. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law Carlton James.
The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 30, at Bernstein Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 31, in Oconee Hill Cemetery.
