Gloria Ashton Hunnicutt,, age 93, of Athens, Georgia, passed away on October 21, 2012, at St. Mary's Hospice House. Miss Hunnicutt was born on September 27, 1919, in Athens. She was the daughter of the late Dr. John Atkinson Hunnicutt, Jr., and the late Jule Balfour Hunnicutt. She resided in Athens all of her life and in her family home.
She attended Barrow School, Athens High School, and graduated from the University of Georgia with an A.B. Degree in History. While at the University she was a member of Phi Mu Sorority. During her life she was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, the Athens Junior Assembly, and the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Georgia.
Miss Hunnicutt spent many of her middle years working with her dear friend Ann Orr Morris, a well-known Athens silversmith and artist, creating artistic pieces of silver, jewelry, and copperware. She also will be remembered for her love of gardening and nature.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Atkinson Hunnicutt, III, and is survived by his wife, Grace Holden Hunnicutt. She is also survived by a sister, Julia Hunnicutt Terry, and a brother, Pendleton Balfour Hunnicutt and his wife Jean. She is also survived by nine nieces and nephews.
Miss Hunnicutt was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt and great aunt who valued her family greatly. She will be deeply missed by all.
The family thanks Bentley Assisted Living in Jefferson, Georgia, and St. Mary's Hospice House for their loving care.
The graveside service will be held at Oconee Hill Cemetery on Wednesday, October 24 at 3:00 p.m. with Dr. Glenn Doak officiating. Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
