Helen Jordan Howington, age 92, was promoted to Glory on September 4, 2013, at her home in Athens.

Helen was born in Macon on August 9, 1921, to the late Wiley and Trudia Jordan. She grew up in Macon and graduated from Miller High School, also in Macon. She attended the University of Georgia in 1940, and later received her honorary doctoral degree in nutrition from Donsbach University.
Helen married Otis C. "O.C." Howington on August 16, 1941. They were happily married for 72 years.
Helen was a Christian first and an active servant for her Lord at Forest Heights Baptist Church, where she taught the Friendship Bible Class for several years. She had a passion to share her faith with others. She also loved flowers, especially orchids, and just "playing in the dirt."
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her brother, Pete Jordan, of Macon.
She is survived by her husband, Otis C. "O.C." Howington; daughter, Pat H. Johnson (and husband, Rex Johnson), of Watkinsville; son, Bobby Howington (and wife, Dianne H. Howington), also of Watkinsville; grandchildren, Tonia Askew, Robert Askew, David Howington, and Christopher Howington (and wife, Leandra Howington); great-grandchildren, Nicky Williams, Melissa Fitzpatrick, and Georgia Howington; great-great-grandchildren, Taylin, Brennin, Brogan, Maddie, and C.J.; nieces and nephews; and her daughter in Christ, Carletta Brown, who loved and cared for her.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, September 6, at Bernstein Funeral Home, in Athens.
A service to celebrate Helen's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, at Forest Heights Baptist Church, 1155 Oglethorpe Avenue, Athens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Forest Heights Baptist Church or to Gideons International.
