Margaret Sloan Collins Totty, 57, of Athens, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2013, of melanoma. Born May 27, 1956, in Athens, Margaret was a daughter of the late Morris W. H. Collins Jr. and Maysie Lyons Collins of Athens. Margaret was graduated from Clarke Central High School in 1974; earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Arizona in 1978; and a master's in rehabilitation counseling from the University of Georgia in 1981. She was an assistant director of the Disability Resource Center at the University of Georgia, devoting 23 years of her life to the office and her great friends there.
She enjoyed playing with her Australian Shepherd, Sydney, reading, spending time with her children, and laughing with her friends and family. She loved to travel, living in Arizona, Connecticut, Nevada, and Hawaii before settling down permanently in her native Athens. She will be remembered for her quick sense of humor and infectious smile.
In addition to her parents, Margaret was predeceased by a brother, Morry Collins, of Athens. She is survived by her children, Kenna and Jameson Totty, of Athens; her sister, Susan Collins Geolot, and her husband, Alan Geolot, of Bethesda, Md., and their children, Drew Geolot of Washington, D.C., and May Geolot of London; her brother, John Collins, of Columbia, S.C.; her aunt, Marjorie C. Collins of Athens; her best friend, Debra Sheridan, of Marietta, Ga.; and her former husband, Kenneth Rex Totty, of Athens.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Oconee Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Margaret suggested donations be made to The
