Marian Zachry Martin of Athens died November 29, 2013 at age 95.
Marian was born on December 20, 1917 in Augusta, Georgia. She was the daughter of Edward Berry Martin and Janie Zachry Martin of Athens, Georgia. She is survived by her longtime friends Carol Neal and Warnell Neal. A graveside service was held on December 17 at Evergreen Memorial Park, officiated by Dr. Edward R. Bolen.
Marian is fondly remembered as a sweet, gentle person. She endured hardships and suffering with courage and dignity. Marian received an A.B. degree from Emory University in 1939, and an M.A. degree with a major in German from the University of Georgia in 1941. She was elected to Phi Beta Kappa while at Emory.
During World War II Marian worked for the U.S. Office of Censorship in Miami, Florida. She taught German briefly at Shenandoah College in Virginia and at Mercer University. Marian worked at the University of Georgia in the Agriculture Extension Service office and in other departments.
She was a self employed typist for many years, and typed theses and dissertations for graduate students. One especially noteworthy job she performed was in connection with the book "Drugs and Pharmacology in the Life of Georgia 1733 – 1959" by Dr. Robert C. Wilson, Dean of the Pharmacy School. She took dictation and typed the manuscript for the book, which was published in 1959.
Marian was a choir member at First United Methodist Church for several decades. She loved classical music and spent many hours listening to WUGA radio. She had a life long interest in tennis and played tennis in her youth. She attended many matches at the UGA tennis courts and watched pro tennis matches on TV.
Marian will be greatly missed, and we are left with sadness and heartache.
