Sue Smith Obituary

Sue Marshall Smith died in Athens on Saturday, September 21, 2013.
Sue was the widow of Charles Carr Smith and is survived by their three daughters, Patricia Ruppersburg (and husband, Hugh) and Cecile Moore (and partner, Fred Buls), of Athens, and Denise Smith, of Chambersburg, Pa. Sue is also survived by her grandchildren, Michael Ruppersburg (and wife, Sarah), Charles Ruppersburg (and wife, Chelsey), and Max Ruppersburg. One surviving sister, Ruth (Russell) Thomas, lives in Sarasota, Fla., and her sister-in-law, Charlotte (George O. Jr.) Marshall, lives in Athens. Sue thoroughly enjoyed seeing her numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and cousins at the annual family reunion that she instituted. She also has extensive extended family living in South Georgia.
Sue was born Patricia Sue Marshall in Americus on October 25, 1925, to George Octavious and Martha Pryor Marshall, the fiercely independent middle child of five. She was a proud graduate of Wake Forest University, with a degree in English. After college, she worked as a journalist on several newspapers before joining radio station WDEC, in Americus, where she met and married Charlie. Sue and Charlie owned and operated several radio stations together for many years.
Sue generously gave her energy, talent, and business acumen to her daughters and their businesses. After her husband's death, Sue moved to Athens, where she enjoyed her family, gardening, politics, current events, and Mad Men. She will be greatly missed.
A graveside service will be held at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, at Oconee Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Karen Redwine officiating.
The family requests that memorial donations be made to the North Georgia Food Bank, 861 Newton Bridge Rd., Athens, GA 30607.
Online condolences may be offered at www.bernsteinfuneralhome.com.
Bernstein Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Athens, is in charge of the arrangements.
