Sylvia Mary Rucker, 78, died December 18, 2012.
Born in 1934 in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Irvin and Mary Bratfish.
Mrs. Rucker graduated Sum Cuma Laude from Western Hills High School and was active in many academic and social clubs. She received her Bachelor's Degree with a minor in math from the University of Cincinnati. She was an officer of her class and a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. Mrs. Rucker received her Master's and Specialist Degrees from the University of Georgia with a major in Math Education.
During the 1950's, she was chosen by General Electric New Jet Engine Division in Cincinnati, Ohio to work as a computer programmer in their Jet Engine Division. While her husband was earning his degree at the University of Illinois in Champagne Urbana, she was a computer programmer for the Chemistry Department on the groundbreaking Illiac Computer, which was the second computer ever developed.
Mrs. Rucker moved to Georgia in 1960 with her husband of fifty-five years, Professor Jerald J. Rucker. For many years, she was an active member of the University Women's Club, Athens Junior Women's Club and Chapelwood Methodist Church since 1962. There she sang in the choir from 1962 until 2010 and was a member of the Methodist Women's Club, as well as a Girl Scout Leader.
In addition to her husband, Jerald, she is survived by her younger sister, Lois Radel of Hilton Head Island; her daughter, Leslie Lynn Racker of Athens; sister-in-law, Beverly Bratfish of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Mrs. Rucker taught in Clarke County, Walton County, Charter Winds, and at Athens Technical College and Truett-McConnell College.
