Growing up in Athens in the 50's and 60's, going to football games and other sports was what we did. Kelley's Y boys were famous in the eyes of Athenians. After college and marriage, we moved back to Athens and purchased our first home, on Whitehead Road next door to the Johnson family. What great neighbors they were. When our son was a toddler outside, Andy would "play ball" with him. Frequently they would visit to see the babies, I think. As we were new parents and working hard they would often bring treats over for us. Mr. Johnson was sick when our daughter was born in January of 1971. When he was allowed to get out of the house, one of his first trips was to see our new baby. The whole family was good folks. Andy, as has already been said, was a special person. God's blessings on your family. Jerry and Helen CARTER (62) Bridges.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. Dear Chot and Family please accept my deepest prayers for your family during this difficult time. I was fortunate to work with Andy and Dick Conn in New England. As an athletic trainer, Andy was the first player I ever saw sit in an ice cold whirlpool after a hot summer practice. Soon others followed. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

I played football on the 69 championship team with Andy... basically from third grade through Valdosta. He was always a champion in every game he played. Imagination, intelligence and love for every sport. He became a f/b friend lately. We will miss him.

I went to school with Andy from 7th grade on, and he was one of the nicest guys you ever could meet. In addition to being a fantastic all-around athlete, he was a very fine man. My sincerest condolences to his family.

Chot and family: It has been so many years since we were all together at UGA while our husbands played football and baseball for the DAWGS. We have so many happy memories during those years. I think we were some of the first married couples on the team. Kim had to ask Coach Dooley if we could get married before he asked my Father.
My heart goes out to you and your family. Kim always tells me when he sees you and Andy at Georgia Alumni get togethers. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Andy's passing, I think of how genuinely kind he was to the black kids that integrated the schools in the 1960's. He was always apologizing for the bad behavior of his peers. When I returned to Burney-Harris, our schools played against each other in basketball. That's the Andy I knew and remember. A person's death should hold meaning. Their good deeds speak for themselves. The Charity that others give in their name. The knowledge they leave behind that benefit others. This was Andy.. May God embrace you with all his love, care, and strength, during this sad and difficult time. We offer our deepest sympathy to the Johnson family and those who knew and loved him. Cling to God, He is a safe place in the storms of life.

What can be said about Andy, other than his being such a kind, sweet, & humble person. I have never heard anyone say anything to the contrary about him. Many fond memories of him at AHS & UGA. We will miss him terribly. Our prayers go out to his family.

We will always remember fondly our trips together....skiing and the blizzard in North Carolina....and the ski lift operator who thought Bobby was the football player! And our trip to Foxboro was great fun! Chot, always remember the laughter. I know Andy is in heaven. Someday we will all be together again. We loved Andy. Love you too....

It's hard to give a short statement about Andy.
I was one year older than he and was in the Athens High School Class of 1969. I didn't share classes with him, but our paths crossed all the time. He was always friendly and courteous.
Speaking for myself, I had a huge crush on him from watching him play sports, especially football. Who wouldn't? He was handsome and nice and never put on airs. Then he became a star at the UGA and my crush continued.
I feel like he was my friend and am very, very sad at his passing.
May he rest in peace and may his family find comfort in the thousands of people who thought the world of him. I know that the Athens Community honors him and loves him.

I remember Andy when he was playing at GA. I would take my son to watch him, as he was his favorite player. When someone would make a remark about his play he made, my son would get all upset and say they shouldn't have said that.
God Bless your Family.
