Evelyn G. Lyle 91, of Athens, died peacefully early Sunday morning, September 2, 2018.

A native of Swanquarter, NC, she was a daughter of the late Robert Gibbs and the late Zena Armstrong Gibbs.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Chester A. Lyle, brother, Carmel Gibbs, and sister, Pearl G. Vernon.

Survivors include sons Wayne A. Lyle (Debra), Gregory A. Lyle, and daughter Paula Lyle; sister, Marlylin G. Gibbs from Greensboro, NC; grandchildren Kelly W. Lyle (Renee), Kim Lyle Butler (Joey), Danielle Lyle, Jessi K. Riggs (Matt), and Alea Lyle Moore (Scott); 11 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Evelyn was a longtime faithful member of Edwards Chapel Baptist Church. She loved serving the Lord, her family, and friends. She served in many roles within the church such as the food ministry, Senior Christians, Sunday school teacher, and nursery worker. A Volunteer in Missions, she was part of a mission group to Santa Clara, Panama with the Sarepta Baptist Association. She was a fantastic seamstress and sewed for numerous people throughout the Athens area. She also taught herself to cook at an early age, and loved to cook for family and special occasions; her love for reading led her to the Carpenter Shop Christian Bookstore where she was employed for many years.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at Edwards Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jack Segars officiating along with Rev. Eric Bunch and Rev. Dr. Wilson Lattimore. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until service time. Immediately following the service, the family will host a luncheon in the church fellowship hall.

Grandchildren and great-grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
