Thomas Edward Carter Sr., age 92, of Athens, went peacefully to be with his Lord on March 31, 2013.

A native of Oconee County, he was the son of the late Thomas Mackey Carter and Ella Willard Carter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Silas L. Carter, Clarence Carter, Jenny Mae Wortham, and F. C. Carter.
Mr. Carter served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from the University of Georgia as a manager at the Physical Plant, and was a longtime member of West End Baptist Church. He dedicated his life to his wife, his family, and those he loved.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Ruthie Lee Carter; sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas E. "Tommy" Carter and Jennifer, of Columbia, S.C., and Ben Carter and Lori, of Clarksville; daughter and son-in-law, Margaret Ann Ashburn and Tom, of Columbia, S.C.; brother, Lloyd D. Carter, of Hull; sister, Opal Griffin, of Athens; sisters-in-law, Hazel Carter, of Commerce, and Jeanette (Walt) Baker, of Statham; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at Lord & Stephens West.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, at the Lord & Stephens West Chapel, with the Revs. Lee Hunter, Jeff Lester, and Ray Finger officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The pallbearers will be Steve Wortham, Harry Ray Carter, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Lester, Jimbo Stephenson, and Sam Stephens.
