Dallas Matthew Tarkenton Jr., 77, of Athens passed Saturday July 5th, 2014 due to an extended illness.
Born in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, Dallas lived the majority of his years in Georgia-graduating from both Athens High and The University of Georgia.
During his time in Athens, Dallas served on the Board of the Athens Y Camp. He was a member of First United Methodist Church for fifty years.
As a businessman, Dallas owned Evergreen Memorial Park and Highland Hills Village, along with many radio stations throughout the Southeast.
Dallas is survived by his wife of 55 years; May Ree (Massey); three sons and two daughters-in-law, four grandsons and a granddaughter-in-law. Chip (Dee Dee, Dallas IV and Davis) Midlothian, Virginia; Chuck (Angie, Stephen & Kelley and Chad) Newnan, Georgia and Chris , Duluth, Georgia. Brothers Francis Tarkenton (Linda), Wendell Tarkenton (Peggy) and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Tarkenton was preceded in death by his parents Dr. Dallas Matthew Tarkenton Senior and Frances Brown Tarkenton.
Services are scheduled for Tuesday July 8th at the First United Methodist Church of Athens. Visitation in the Hancock Hall begins at 1 pm with the main sanctuary service slated for 2 pm. Reverend Martha Aenchbacher and Chaplin Mark Tjepkema will officiate. Entombment follows at Evergreen Memorial Park Athens.
