John I Sims, 91, of Statham, joined his beloved wife Mildred in heaven on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012. A decorated World War II veteran, life time member of Hebron Christian Church, retired Colonial Store butcher, and a dedicated farmer, he taught his children and grandchildren the values of hard work, honesty, integrity, generosity, service and love of community and country.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Muzette and Clarence Sims, two brothers, four sisters, and his wife, Mildred Sims (June 12, 2011).
He is survived by his daughters and their spouses, Judy and Bruce Pemberton of Atlanta and Phyllis and Jim Luke of Bogart; his adoring grandchildren and their spouses, Prentiss and Jocelyn Pemberton and Damon and Krista Pemberton of Anchorage, Alaska, and Mike and Suzanna Luke Trice of Peachtree Corners; and five great-grandchildren who loved to watch the cows with "Pop", and many nieces and nephews who always looked up to "Uncle Sonny". Survivors also include his sister Virginia Hunter, of Statham, and sister-in-law Barbara Evans Choate, of Atlanta.
The family will welcome visitors on Thursday night from 6-9 pm at Smith Funeral Home in Winder, and funeral services will be held at Hebron Christian Church on Friday at 3:00 pm; body will lie in state from 2:30 to 3:00 at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Advantage, 2470 Daniel Bridge Road, Suite 171, Athens, GA 30606 or to Hebron Christian Church, 2461 Hebron Church Road, Winder, GA 30680.
