Mr. Ray Abernathy, age 83, of Winder, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2012.

Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Joel and Gillie Abernathy, and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Martha; his eldest son, Mike, of Athens; and his youngest son, Jerry, and daughter-in-law, Susan, of Dacula, along with his grandkids, Erin and Kyle Abernathy.
Ray was born on April 1, 1929, in Helen. He was a 1946 graduate of Towns Co. High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture from Berry College in 1950, and served proudly in the U.S. Navy from 1952 until 1956.
He worked for the Department of Agriculture for 30 years, beginning in the Veteran Training Program, then as a county supervisor for the Farmers Home Administration, before retiring as the Assistant District Director in 1984.
Upon his retirement from the government in 1984, Ray started a second career in real estate development, both building and managing apartments. He retired again in 2009.
Ray called Winder home for 52 years, and was an active member of the Lions Club and the First Baptist Church Brotherhood Sunday School Class for most of this time. He enjoyed yard work, gardening, and the Georgia Bulldogs.
The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, at Smith Funeral Home, in Winder. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 30, at the First Baptist Church of Winder, with the Rev. Irby Stanley officiating.
