Stephen Wilson Deal, age 69, of Conyers, died on Saturday, October 6, 2012, from heart failure.
Steve was born in Kannapolis, N.C., to Jay L. Deal and Sarah Ethel Gray. He felt thankful and lucky to have made his living by doing his passion, photography and photojournalism. His first job as a news photographer was in Kannapolis in 1963. He married his love, Brenda Laughter, in 1965, and together moved to Athens, where Steve started the photo department at the Athens Banner-Herald in 1967.
In 1971, Steve took a position at the Atlanta Journal & Constitution (AJC) as a staff photographer, where he worked until he retired in 1999. His first assignment for the AJC was covering Coretta Scott King, and from there his stories and documentation of southern history are endless.
Steve will always be remembered saying, "As long as I've got a camera in my hand, I can do anything."
He is survived by a daughter, Tyson Deal, of Athens; son, Brady Deal, of Covington; daughter-in-law, Paula Deal; grandson, Easton Deal; brother, Ralph Deal, and sister-in-law, Linda Deal, both of Kannapolis, N.C.; and loving dog, Ellie May Deal. He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Laughter Deal.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, at Scot Ward's Green Meadow Chapel. The family will receive friends Wednesday for two hours prior to the service.
