Mrs. Julia Mae Winters Gouge, age 91, of Hickory, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, at the Brian Center.

Mrs. Gouge was born on June 19, 1921, in Yancey County, the daughter of Charles and Dora Robinson Winters. A member of Viewmont Baptist Church, she sang in the choir, was a G.A. leader, and had taught the 4-year-old Sunday school class. A devoted and loving homemaker, seamstress, and great Christian woman, she was devoted to her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Sherrill William Gouge; brothers, Charles, Frank, and James Winters and Will Greene; and sisters, Irene Stodolsky and Ruby Wilson.
Survivors include her son, Gerald Gouge, and his wife, Sally, of Athens; daughter, Saundra Denny, and her husband, Don, of Hickory, N.C.; sisters, Faye Young, her husband, John, and Emma Lee Sullins, all of Hickory; grandchildren, Brian Denny, of Atlanta, Joel Denny, and his wife, Jenny, of Hickory, and Marianne Gouge, of Athens; great-grandchildren, Emma and Kate Denny, both of Hickory; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 8, at Catawba Funerals & Cremations, officiated by Pastor Jay Robison. Burial will be private.
